A memorial ledger stone to the Right Honourable The Lord Callaghan of Cardiff KG was dedicated in the north-west corner of the nave of Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 7th July 2015.
Wincilate Welsh Slate were delighted and honoured to have supplied a piece of Aberllefenni Welsh slate which was recently fixed at Westminster Abbey in memory of James Callaghan
Lord Callaghan (27 March 1912 – 26 March 2005) was the Labour Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. He is the only politician to have held all four ‘great offices of state’, having also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary.
The plaque was engraved by Nicholas Sloan who said “It was a pleasure to work Aberllefenni slate again ”
Aberllefenni slate is still regarded by sculptors and letter cutters as the best Welsh slate available slate for engraving on as it is free from blemishes and natural markings and takes a superb letter.
